So you are headed to PAX Prime this weekend. It’s sad to say, but Jeff and I are very jealous of you.  To be honest we couldn’t afford the trip this year, one of the main reasons for me is that I am planning and paying for a wedding. So I sat down and thought, what would Jeff and I do if we were at PAX Prime?

I put together this little guide for those of you going who might be curious to check out some things that Jeff and I would have checked out.  Also, it’s a good guide to get you started for the awesomeness that is PAX.   It will take you to some of our friends that are going to be at the show, as well as some of the games we are looking forward to.

These are my personal choices that I would have told Jeff that we have to stop at. Mind you, it doesn’t mean we would keep our eyes closed to everything else, it just means these are the places that interest us the most before the show. I am sure there will be a ton of stuff to check out and fall in love with.

Also, when you stop at each of these spots, let them know that Just Press Start sent you! Who knows, you might get some extra swag!

4th Floor of the Expo Hall

Since the Expo hall is expanded, I thought it would be best to start with the 4th floor.  This list isn’t done in order of importance.

Trapdoor Inc.  Booth N8

Trapdoor will actually be outside of the Expo Hall within the lobby.  At PAX East they were showing off Warp, which ended up with a casual gamer fan in my Fiancee.  Warp should be playable at the booth. They also picked up the publishing rights for Fez, which is an indie title that has a 3d twist on a 2d platformer. So be on the lookout for Fez, and hopefully that one is play able as well.

Uber Entertainment #3004

It’s no secret that we are friends with John Comes and Eka of Uber Entertainment.  They are 100% stand up guys, and it’s always fun to check in with them.  it’s also fun to see Greg Stackhouse doing his best Howard Cosell impersonation.  You would find me over there trying to get the scoop on what’s coming for Super Monday Night Combat as well as playing with the best of them.

Twisted Pixel #3007

Jay Stuckwisch would love to hear that we sent you over to try out one of their many games.  I am sure that the Gunstringer will be able to be played on the show floor.

Red 5 Studios #3017, 3117, 3103, 3217

Red 5 is the developer of Firefall, which has been on my watch list for a while.  Not going to lie, but I am trying to get into the Beta for the game when it comes out.  They are going to be show casing Firefall the whole time they are there, specifically:

  • PvP & PvE demos on 40 top-of-the-line Alienware demo stations
  • Travel via dropship to Copacabana to complete dynamic missions and epic events
  • Run co-op missions with your fellow PAX attendees!
  • Defend against a Chosen invasion in the open world
  • Participate in 10v10 mini tournaments on a new PvP map – Orbital Comm Tower: Sabotage
  • Adventure in our open-world
  • Talk to our team! All 60+ Red 5 tribe members on hand
  • Play the live Crystite Challenge missions each day to earn prizes
  • Special giveaways for the first 500 players each day

Definitely worth dropping by and checking them out!

Runic Games #770

I am sure Max Schaefer will have plenty to show and talk about with Torchlight 2 coming out.  Also, who knows maybe something about the Torchlight MMO?? (Speculation right there)

Capcom #3425

While we have never had the chance to talk to anyone over at Capcom, Tekken X Street Fighter looks hot.  Oh yeah it’s playable at the event.  Expect a big line, because all their newer fighting games are playable there.

CCP Games #422

Everyone knows my disappointment after E3 about DUST514, though the press as of late have been saying a lot of good things about it. I would give the new cross platform MMOFPS a look and see if they are going to demo it at all.  I would also ask them why they don’t go to PAX East when it’s closer to their home in Iceland!

Demiurge Studios #1338

Shoot Many Robots was just picked up by Ubisoft for publishing and should be coming out next year hopefully just after the holiday season. Give the game a go, Jeff loved it at PAX East.

Reverb Publishing #3652

Dungeon Defenders (by Trendy Entertainment) for XBLA was just dated, and will be playable over here. I have been looking forward to it.

Robot Entertainment #940

Jeff got a chance to talk to Robot Entertainment about Orcs Must Die. Just get over there and play it!

Ska Studios #3020

I am hoping James will be doling out some information about Charlie Murder, his newest title.  Also, I am sure @shelldragon will be there to sell some of The Dishwasher plushies she was thinking about having made up!

SRRN Games #3020

See what SRRN is cooking up on the iOS next.  Aujang is full of surprises and a great guy to talk to.  Ash for iOS is a great RPG.  Ask about Embers if you have a chance to.

The Behemoth #3003

Battle Block Theater just keeps getting cooler and cooler. I think this one is the next Castle Crashers for them, I really do!  Check it out and say hi.

Vblank Entertainment # 3011

Retro City Rampage has been on my radar for a while.  This 8bit style XBLA game has a lot to offer those of us that were playing the original NES.  I can’t wait to get my hands on it, and you will be able to at their booth!  PLAY IT!

 Ubisoft #612, 622, 632, 832

They usually have a good booth set up where you can get in, play the games and have one of the frag dolls give you all the specs about the game.   They have a HUGE showing in their booth:

•       Assassin’s Creed Revelations
•       From Dust™
•       Just Dance® 3
•       Might & Magic® Heroes® VI
•       Might & Magic Heroes Kingdoms™
•       Rayman® Origins
•       Rocksmith™
•       Shoot Many Robots™
•       Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Online
•       Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Future Soldier™
•       TrackMania™2 Canyon

More than enough there to keep everyone entertained.  We mentioned Shoot Many Robots already, but also Ghost Recon online and Ghost Recon Future Soldier look awesome and I would give them a try.

6th Floor Expo Hall

Haunted Temple #6401

This booth is the greatest reason to head up to the 6th floor (other than the PAX 10).  Skulls of the Shogun will be playable with all the latest tweaks and touches to the game.  Jake Kazdal has poured his heart and soul into this game, it is well worth checking out and spending the time.   I loved it when I played it.   I wish I could get a preview build of the game and it’s one of the biggest XBLA games I am looking forward to!

Tin Man Games #6027

Game book adventures are worth checking out and getting your hands on.  I played a few and I love them.  Great games for on the go, as they are on the iOS and also a good way to get that teenager to read.

PAX 10 #6301

Jeff and I love checking out the indie stuff, and we know for a fact that Fez is one of the PAX 10.  If you didn’t get a chance to check it out within the trapdoor inc booth, check it out here!

There are a lot of gems out there waiting to be discovered within the many nooks and crannies that you will find at PAX.  Also notice that I steered clear of a lot of the bigger video game booths, with two exceptions.  It’s not because I don’t like what they have to offer, or I am not interested. I just prefer to spend my time talking to developers and playing the games, not waiting in lines for hours and hours.

If I were to wait in line, I would check out the panels that some of our friends our hosting. The following panels are the devs that we have talked to in the past.

Brittany Aubert (from Women in Gaming Panel)
What Women Really Want

Michelle Juett (Ska Studios)
The Harridan’s Guide to the Game Industry

The guys over at Twisted Pixel have their own panel.
Twisted Pixel Variety Hour

Jake Kazdal (Haunted Temple Studios)
From  0 to Indie in 5 easy Steps

Pick up some swag, chill out, game, and have a great time. There are a million and one things to do there.  Don’t forget about the board games section either, or else Steve might get mad.
